A number of recent Australian companies making headlines for the wrong reasons has “challenged the reputation of boards and management and underscored the diminished trust and confidence in business leadership.”[1] There is no more important task for company directors in the year ahead than to win back community trust and respect, stressed Graham Bradley, when presenting the AICD 2017 Essential Director Update briefings.

Culture, defined as a “collection of standards that a company sets for its internal and external behaviour towards employees, customers and the general community,” is not only a key determinant of the ability of a business to maintain its ‘social license to operate,’ but also a significant driver of company value.[2] Companies that don’t invest in deepening and embedding integrity are at risk of reputation damage, intervention by regulators, and diminishing customer and community support. Bradley stressed that there must be increased focus where value and reputation can be created, or destroyed, and action taken to ensure that businesses engender sound cultures.[3]
